What happened?! How did we get to the final week of Camp Smoking Gun so soon!? How is this week's coffee so good?! Where the heck is it from?! Why would Brandon eat a random mushroom? Is he ok?!
You probably have a lot of questions, but don't worry - we got you!
First of all, yes, this is the final week of Camp SG. We're sad too. BUT, keep an eye on your inbox in the next week or so. We have a follow-up email with a fun surprise for all of you lovely campers.
Now, the coffee. This is our favourite Camp SG coffee EVER. Mostly because there's a wonderful backstory that you can explore below. But, also because it's a very high-end varietal that most casual coffee drinkers don't have the opportunity to experience. It's very balanced with a touch of citrus, some floral notes and toasty brown sugar sweetness. This one sends us to the moon.
It looked like Brandon was about to have a pretty wild time at the end of last week's video. Let's find out what happened. Hit play and let's get weird!
Week 1: Down And Out
Origin: Colombia
Region: Huila
Village: Gigante
Farm: Finca La Florida
Producer: Alba Lucia Camacho
Varietals: Geisha
Process: Washed
Elevation: 1630 MASL
Tasting Notes: Panela, Lemongrass, Jasmine Tea, Teddy Grahams (remember those?)
After harvesting, separating and fully washing the cherries, the beans were fermented for 100 hours and sun-dried on raised beds.
This is a very special coffee to us and we are so excited to share it. First of all, it's a geisha - one of the most famed and sought-after varietals in all of coffee. Nerds love it. It wins awards and gets sold at auction for ridiculous prices. And, it's also wildly delicious.
However, that's not even why it's so special to us. Brandon actually played a (small) part in the production of this coffee! In February 2024 he had the pleasure of visiting Finca La Florida in Huila, Colombia. He met Alba Lucia and Juan, the multi-generation coffee farmers, and he got to work alongside the crew harvesting cherries and planting seedlings. You can read about his travels in our two-part blog series here and here.
It's amazing to taste this coffee after seeing all the hard work and time that goes into it. It has the classic sweetness and jasmine tea aroma geisha is know for. On the back end there's a touch of citrus and it's a super balanced, high-end coffee produced by some wonderful humans.
Welp, there it is! What did you think of this week's coffee? Have you ever had a Geisha before? What was your favourite part of Camp SG? Anyone want to buy a slightly used, mid-quality bear costume?
