Here it is! The fruit bomb we've all been waiting for!

Here it is! The fruit bomb we've all been waiting for!

We had to do it. We knew it. You knew it. It was just a matter of time before we all brewed up a coffee that smells like fruit loops and tastes like ambrosia. This one really delivered the goods.

The varietal might be hard to guess as it is pretty unique and the result of some real nerdy coffee science. We'll give you a bit of a hint: yes it's a natural coffee. If you picked up on the sweetness and that underlying "ripe fruit funk" that's the natural process working. The cherry (coffee is a fruit and the "bean" is actually the seed) is left on during the fermentation and the drying process. This creates more residual sugar than "washed" process coffees.

It's a kaleidoscope of big tropical fruits and it took Brandon to a new level of coffee love and enlightenment. This has become a definitive summer coffee for us. It makes us want to toss a little umbrella in our mug every time we brew it.

Try this one on ice. WE DARE YOU. Seriously, it's so good iced. Ok, here's the reveal:

Week 3: Scavenger Hunt

Origin: Costa Rica

Region: Alajuela

Village: San Juanillo

Farm: Finca V&G

Varietals: Catigua MG2

Process: Natural

Elevation: 1500 MASL

Tasting Notes: Strawberry, Sweet Orange, Tropical Fruit, Mango

Natural process with the majority of the cherry left on the bean. Beans were sun-dried on raised beds.

We've sourced beans from Finca V&G before. If you remember from previous Camp's, Finca V&G is a farm established by an engineer and an agronomist in Costa Rica. They have a 4 acres farm on which the focus has been on experimentation with hybrid varieties that have been developed by CiCafe (coffee research institute of Costa Rica). These hybrids look to take the best qualities from different varieties; improving cup quality, yield, and resistance to disease.

Not only do we love this coffee and are stoked on the MG2 varietal, we also love tasting coffee year over year. Like wine, the end result can differ wildly from year to year based largely on environmental conditions and soil health. We think this was a particularly awesome year with big, big tropical fruit notes.

Did you love Scavenger Hunt? Did you have a chance to try the MG2 at last year's camp? Brandon was just a little fatigued, right? Comment below!

  • Wowza – loved this one! I struggled to determine the origin, but I tasted like strawberries and mango when brewed on our Ratio 6 automatic pour over. This is my favourite week so far!

  • This is delicious! Am home now, but first opened it in its natural habitat – the woods beside Chilliwack Lake, ground with a VSSL.
Glorious fruit without the fines and chaff of a washed. Beautiful!
