Every now and then a coffee comes along that just stops us in our tracks. Our Rwanda Nyampinga Women’s Co-op Washed is one of those coffees. Originally sourced for our annual Camp Smoking Gun event, it quickly became a team favourite—so much so that we couldn’t resist bringing in a little more to share with everyone.
This coffee is comforting, rich, and beautifully balanced. It captures everything we love about Rwandan coffees: a buttery sweetness, a smooth, velvety mouthfeel, and flavours that are both familiar and indulgent. Think brown sugar, fig, and black tea — the flavour of a fresh slice of coffee cake in a cup. It’s the kind of coffee that makes you pause between sips, not because it’s loud or showy, but because it’s effortlessly good.
100% Bourbon — A Heritage Varietal
What makes this coffee even more special is its varietal. The Nyampinga Co-op grows 100% Bourbon, one of the world’s original coffee varieties. Bourbon coffees are celebrated for their complex sweetness and depth, but they’re also more delicate than modern hybrids. That means they’re trickier to grow and increasingly rare — which makes this lot a real find.
We were lucky to get our hands on a small amount—and when we say small, we mean it. This is a very limited edition, available only while supplies last. Each 227g bag represents a connection to coffee’s roots, and a chance to taste something truly timeless.
Grown and Crafted by the Nyampinga Women’s Cooperative
The story behind this coffee is as beautiful as the cup itself. The Nyampinga Women’s Cooperative takes its name from the Kinyarwanda word for “beautiful women, both inside and out.” Formed in 2013, the co-op empowers women farmers in South Rwanda through agronomic training and quality control education.
These women now operate their own washing station in the Nyaruguru region, where they process their coffee with incredible care and precision. Every cherry is hand-picked, mechanically de-pulped, and dried on parchment-lined raised beds, hand-turned regularly to ensure even drying. The result is a cup that’s balanced, clean, and full of character — and the lot is certified organic.
Roasted in Canada, Meant to Be Savoured
At Smoking Gun Coffee, we’re proud to roast coffees like this right here in Canada. This lot is roasted light to highlight its natural sweetness and subtle tea-like complexity. We recommend brewing it on pour-over or a quality drip brewer to experience its full range of flavours.
