We're kicking off Camp SG with a classic that might rock your world. In a good way.

We're kicking off Camp SG with a classic that might rock your world. In a good way.

Any successful back country adventure begins with taking stock of the Bare Essentials.

What's a more essential coffee than one from BRAZIL! That's right, we're kicking off week one with a beautiful coffee from Brazil. Did you know Brazil produces 40% of the world's supply of arabica coffee beans?

Being such a huge producer of coffee, a lot of it ends up in the pre-ground stuff sold in grocery stores, so for some coffee folks, Brazilian coffee might not seem too exciting. That's exactly why we wanted to kick off Camp SG with this coffee.

It might change your perception of Brazilian coffee. There are so many microclimates in Brazil, which is an enormous country, and there are so many multi-generational farmers growing coffee that the variety is staggering.

Brew up a batch and watch Brandon's tasting video below!

Week 1: Bare Essentials

Origin: Brazil

Region: Sul de Minas

Farmer: Danielle Fonseca

Varietal: Topazio

Process: Natural, Anaerobic Fermentation

Elevation: 850 - 940 MASL

Tasting Notes: Cherry, Wine Gums, Subtle Spice (think pink peppercorn)

The cherries were processed naturally (leaving the fruit on) and dried in a thin layer on an open-air patio. The cherries were fermented anaerobically in a steel tank without an adulterants. This is what gives it that complex, ferment-y character that we're calling "wine gums."

The Southern Minas Gerais region is a prominent area in the Brazilian coffee scene, recognized not only nationally but also internationally for the excellence of its coffees. With a rich history and a century-old tradition in coffee production, this region enjoys a unique terroir, where factors such as altitude, soil, and climate combine favourably for the cultivation of high-quality coffee. The diverse geography of Southern Minas offers a variety of microclimates, from gentle plains to rugged mountains, creating ideal conditions for the development of different coffee varieties. This diversity of terroir results in an impressive range of flavour profiles, aromas, and sensory characteristics of the coffees produced in the region.

We love this one because it's delicious, but also because it shows off the variety of coffee that comes out of Brazil, a country with a deep tradition of coffee cultivation and many microclimates that propagates such diversity. We really felt this was the best coffee to kick off Camp SG this year.

And fun fact, Danielle Fonseca is a relative of one of the coffee importers we work closely with, so there's a great connection and transparency with this producer.

What did you think of Bare Essentials? Did you get any interesting tasting notes? How did you brew it? Was that a bear?

  • Very nice start i found subtle flavor similar to a chocolate fruit and nut bar.

  • I knew it was a natural – very few fines and drained remarkably quick (I often brew with washed Ethiopians and expect a battle). Was thinking Colombian or Peruvian. Nice start

  • I’m getting cherry malteser over here, but whatever it is, it’s tasty!

  • I don’t know that last time I had a coffee from Brazil so I was surprised by this reveal. I had no idea what coffee I was drinking!

I get that sweetness and some of that subtle spice note. To me it’s like bay leaf or something. Kind of like when one would describe a wine as “savoury” this coffee reminds me of that.
