Brewing Creativity: Smoking Gun Coffee and the Chilliwack Independent Film Festival

At Smoking Gun Coffee, we have a passion for community and we are proud to be sponsoring a screening of short films at this year’s Chilliwack Independent Film Festival titled "Indigenous Stories."

Now in its 7th year, the Chilliwack Independent Film Festival is an in-person event that takes place at Cottonwood Cinemas in beautiful Chilliwack, B.C. from Friday, November 17 to 19. With curated screening blocks, industry events, fireside talks and workshops, there's something for everyone. After the in-person event, the festival then goes virtual between November 20 - December 3 and anyone anywhere in the world, can purchase a virtual screening pass to watch all the films.

Indigenous Stories” is a screening of 5 short films about and by Indigenous artists and voices. This powerful screening tackles an array of topics such as residential schools and reconciliation. "Indigenous Stories" is more than a collection of films. It’s a platform that amplifies the voices and narratives of Indigenous filmmakers. This segment of the festival provides an opportunity to engage with Indigenous stories, traditions, and contemporary life through the lens of talented artists. These short films encompass a diverse range of themes, from heritage and identity to the challenges and triumphs faced by Indigenous communities today.

The Importance of Indigenous Voices

In a world that is increasingly recognizing the importance of diversity and representation in media, the stories and perspectives of Indigenous communities remain essential. The "Indigenous Stories" screening embodies the power of storytelling to foster understanding and empathy while allowing for meaningful cultural exchanges.

By supporting Indigenous filmmakers and sharing their stories, we hope to support and further our ongoing dialogue about representation, inclusion, and appreciation of diverse narratives. This exciting collaboration promises an inspiring and unforgettable experience for all attendees through the power of storytelling. Don't miss the chance to be part of this cultural celebration at the Chilliwack Independent Film Festival.

About the Screening

The screening takes pace at Cottonwood Cinemas in Chilliwack on Saturday, November 18th at 4:00 P.M. The screening block lasts 2 hours, with all 5 films screening at around 90 minutes total. Following the films is a 30 minute Q & A with the filmmakers/artists present. These Q & A’s are what help make the event extra special and a chance for the audience to engage live with the storytellers.
