Week 4: This week's coffee is brought to you by SCIENCE.

Week 4: This week's coffee is brought to you by SCIENCE.

Before we roll the credits and jet off to our wrap party (quietly sobbing alone in the back of the roastery), we've got one last coffee to reveal!

We pulled out some VERY interesting tasting notes from this one. A lot of them. In fact, everyone on the roastery team had so many great notes and they all fit so we kinda just picked our favourites. There you go, a peek behind the curtain on how we come up with our tasting notes!

Any way, as we explain below, when a crop scientist purchases a coffee farm the result is a lot of experimentation. Which seems to be working out because the one word I'd use to describe this coffee is DYNAMIC.

We imagined this coffee as that fun camper who goes from campsite to campsite with a box of wine under their arm spreading cheer to all of the other campers. A true people person, The Socialite can relate to everyone and they are the person you hope to run into every Summer at your favourite campground.

Without further delay, here it is... the final reveal video of Camp Smoking Gun 2024. I'm not crying, you're crying.

Week 4: The Socialite

Origin: Costa Rica

Region: Alajuela, Naranjo, San Juanillo

Farm: Finca V&G San Juanillo

Farmer: Guillermo López

Varietals: H1

Process: Red Honey

Elevation: 1500 MASL

Tasting Notes: Blood Orange, Milk Chocolate, Wine Gums

Finca V&G (Vargas and Gutierrez) San Juanillo is the brainchild of an agronomist (Tomas Gutierrez) and an industrial engineer (Allan Vargas), who shared a vision for this 4 hectare farm in San Juanillo, Naranjo when they bought it in 2007.

The initial focus has been on experimentation with hybrid varieties that have been developed by CiCafe (coffee research institute of Costa Rica). These hybrids look to take the best qualities from different varieties; improving cup quality, yield, and resistance to disease.

There was only a tiny amount of this coffee available this year and we knew we had to get our hands on some. Shout out to John at Root 86 for hooking us up with it!

Did you enjoy The Socialite? Are you a honey process lover now? Hands up if you're sad that Camp SG 2024 has come to an end? 😢

  • I got a delicious toffee smell from this one as soon as I opened it. Really really delicious! I’ll have to have a brew-off with week 3 to choose my ultimate favourite!

  • Definitely sad its all over and fell in love with honey process coffees as learning the processing method was all new to me. Looking forward to summer camp 2025!

  • Sad it’s almost over but stoked about this final coffee.

Brewed on our Ratio 6 I found this one pretty juicy and indistinguishable fruity. Orange-y but without the acidity and definitely that weird and pleasant wine gum note comes through for me.

This has been a really fun way to reflect on the ritual of drinking coffee in the morning. Slowing down and thinking about what I’m drinking, where it came from, how it got here, etc has been a very reflective experience. Overall, this just gives me an even deeper love for coffee and makes it all that much more enjoyable. Thanks!
