From a lesser known region of Guatemala with little access to the specialty coffee market, further strained by violent conflict over Vancouver owned Escobal silver mine. Locals and coffee farmers organized peaceful protests demanding consultation, transparency, and due process, but were met by government security forces, injuring and killing several land defenders (including coffee farmers).

A few years ago, Drew of Bows Coffee Roasters (Vancouver) travelled to the area and met with farmers to develop a plan to support the farmers peaceful initiatives through long term, stable coffee buying commitments and paying higher prices than the C-market. Alongside many other BC roasters, we took part in a buying group which has now completed its third year of sourcing from this region. The conflict continues, and to this day many coffee producers face death threats and unjust criminalization.

We are proud to be part of this project and privileged to belong to a community of coffee roasters committed to humanity, sustainability, transparency, and more than just the almighty dollar.
